Tons of Fun at Beatrice Middle School
Students organize food drive
by Randy Schlueter
Beatrice Middle School students collected food for the Beatrice Food Pantry during the month of February. Two staff members, Sam Dierberger and Christy Schaaf organized a food drive during mentor, which is at the beginning of each school day. Students created posters, signs and read announcements to advertise the food drive. Students also advertised the items that the pantry desperately needed. Several days a week, students from the two mentors collected items. Food was weighed in every classroom in order keep a running pounds total. When a mentor class earned 100 pounds the class received doughnuts. The mentor period that collected the most food (pounds) from each grade received a pizza party. The winners for 6th grade were Mrs. Dierberger, in the 7th grade Ms. Danielson, and in the 8th grade Mrs. Schaaf. When the food drive was over, the students had collected 3,582 pounds of food for the needy families in Beatrice. Beatrice Middle School bypassed the goal of 1 ton (2,000 lbs) that Schaaf's and Dierberger's set at the beginning of the project. Beatrice Middle School collected food during February to meet the needs of the Food Pantry. After Christmas, the Beatrice Food Pantry begins to run out of many needed items. The middle school students helped the pantry meet their needs by collecting a large amount of food at a time when the pantry was running low after the holiday season. Students at Beatrice Middle School should feel proud of what they have done for the community of Beatrice.
