How to Apply for College Admission

by Carla Meyer

Another handout given to BHS seniors at the September meeting that may be useful to parents as well:

1.  Obtain an application form from one of these sources:

    a.  College representative (from a school visit or from Educational Planning Night)

    b.  From the college/university (contact the admissions office of the college by phone, letter, e-mail or on-line from the college website).  Most schools now prefer the on-line application for admission.

2.  Be aware of the cost of application ($45-$60 is normal; SCC has no charge) and the cost of attending schools that interest you.  Seniors were given a College Prep Handbook from the Education Quest that lists all the websites of Nebnraska colleges and the cost of attendance at each school.  The guidance office has additional copies.  It's usually advisable to apply for admission to several schools.  Your counselor can help you decide if this statement is true for you.

3.  Complete the information on the application and submit by mail if paper and electronically if the application is on-line.  You will be asked:

    a.  Demographic information (name, address, date of birth, social security etc.)

    b.  ACT scores and dates of testing.

    c.  Major you plan to plan to pursue ("undecided" is accepted if you really don't know)

    d.  Date you expect to begin college

    e.  Degree objective (associates at a community college and bachelor's degree at a four year school)

    f.  To provide a high school transcript (contact Mrs. Morris and request an official copy be sent; if there is a "transcript verification form" in the application (will be a separate page on-line) in the application, bring that to the BHS guidance office when you request a transcript).  There is no charge for a BHS while you are student at BHS.  After you graduate, the charge is $2.00.

    g.  Payment for the application (check by mail or credit card on-line).

3.  Complete scholarship information for that college also if it's a part of the application for admission.  At some schools you must request scholarship information separately; at others, it's a part of the entrance application.  This is not the same as scholarships that have been in the bulletin or in the local scholarship booklet released in December by BHS.

4.  Complete the application of admission and scholarship information for that school by the deadline stated on each.  Deadlines are not just suggestions--be mindful of them.
