Take Pride In America honors Beatrice Middle School 8th Grade Students
Christy Schaaf and Sam Dierberger extend student learning
Beatrice Middle School was honored as a national “Take Pride In America” school on May 5, 2006. Beatrice Middle School is one of a few schools in the United States to have received this honor in 2006. To earn this honor, Take Pride Schools must accomplish two volunteer projects every school year. The school, a classroom or a club may do projects. Projects must be on public lands (public schools included!), promote Take Pride's message and benefit public use of public land. Michelle Cangelosi, Take Pride In America director, attended the ceremony and presented Beatrice Middle School with the award. (see related site below)
Beatrice Middle School has worked with the Homestead National Monument by participating in a water quality-testing project during the past four years. Christy Schaaf, eighth grade science teacher at the middle school started the project in cooperation with Susan Cook and Mark Engler from the Homestead Monument. During the Earth Science portion of the 8th grade curriculum, Mrs. Schaaf took her students to the park to work with Jesse Bolli, a member of the park staff. The program expanded after the initial year to include Sam Dierberger, the other 8th grade science teacher. Currently, the students from each teaching team go to the Homestead once each quarter to test the water.
For the students at Beatrice Middle School, the Homestead National Monument becomes an extension of the school. Students are able to study the water testing process in school and then put into practice what they have learned. When students return to school, they work with volunteer members of the Master Ranger Corps to analyze their data. Learning takes on a new perspective when the students have the opportunity to experience a “real world” setting where their skills are put into practice. The project is also a community service project for the students of Beatrice Middle School. The data that they collect four times a year is stored to ensue that the quality of water meets safety standards of the federal government.
The 8th grade students at Beatrice Middle School should be proud of their efforts and Mrs. Schaaf, Mrs. Moore, and Mr. Dierberger for their work in helping students be successful.
