Beatrice Public Schools Awarded CLSD Grant to Strengthen Literacy for All Students
Beatrice Public Schools is proud to announce it has been selected to receive support through the Nebraska Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD) Grant, a federal program administered by the Nebraska Department of Education.
In August 2024, the Nebraska Department of Education was awarded a $55 million CLSD grant spanning five years. The purpose of the program is to strengthen literacy and pre-literacy skills for students from birth through grade 12, with a strong focus on supporting disadvantaged students, including children living in poverty, English learners, and students with disabilities.
This investment directly supports NebraskaREADS, a statewide initiative launched in 2018 to advance high-quality reading instruction and interventions in response to the Nebraska Reading Improvement Act. By aligning local efforts with the state’s literacy vision, Beatrice Public Schools will be able to expand resources, strengthen instructional practices, and ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed as a reader.
“Literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning,” said Dr. Jackie Nielsen, Asst. Supt. “This grant allows us to deepen our commitment to providing every student with the tools they need to become confident, capable readers. We are excited about the opportunities this will bring to our students, families, and staff.”
Funding, in the amount of up to $269,000/year for 5 years from the CLSD grant will provide Beatrice educators with professional development, evidence-based instructional materials, and stronger systems of support for students who need additional assistance. It will also enhance connections with families, helping them engage in literacy practices at home.
Beatrice Public Schools is committed to ensuring that all students—no matter their background or circumstances—develop the reading and literacy skills necessary for success in school and in life. The CLSD grant will help accelerate this work, furthering the district’s mission of preparing every student for a bright future.
