UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM @ BHS

UPWARD BOUND

The Upward Bound program is a federally funded program through the US Department of Education. Upward Bound is designed to build and strengthen the motivation and skills students need to succeed in college. Qualifications for participation in the program include having academic potential, meeting income criteria, and/or coming from a family in which neither parent has earned a Bachelor's degree. Benefits of participating in the Upward Bound Program include increased educational expectations for students as well as increased likelihood of entering and completing a post-secondary program of study.

The Academic Year Program

Provides students with tutoring and is based on the needs of the individual student. Other activities during the academic year program may include student success workshops, cultural experiences such as plays, concerts and art exhibits, and field trips. Students are also offered a variety of pre-college assistance such as academic advisement, assistance with applications, scholarship searches, campus visits and ACT preparation.

The Summer Component

During an intensive five week session, students are involved in a combination of college preparation courses and personal development activities.  In addition, students participate in cultural events, career skill building and social activities.  Students also have the opportunity to earn a summer trip during the sixth week of the program.

Bridge Program

Students in Upward Bound who have completed their senior year in high school and who are eligible for admission at SCC have the opportunity to live on campus during a five week session and earn college credit.  This serves as a transition between high school and college increasing the likelihood of a successful college experience.

Beatrice High School is partnering with Southeast Community College as well as two other southeast Nebraska high schools to serve 50 eligible students. Participating high schools are Southern and Fairbury.

The Upward Bound office is located on the SCC - Beatrice Campus, Kennedy Center, room K334.
